The European Commission opened an infringement procedure this Monday against the social network

Brussels believes that it is also failing to comply with the new transparency requirements demanded by the digital services law and that it is not adopting effective measures to mitigate the “risks” in electoral processes, according to the institution said in a statement.

It is the first investigation that the European Commission has opened against a large platform since the regulations came into force last year.

The digital services law obliges large platforms to annually evaluate the risk they may cause to society, taking into account aspects such as the content they recommend to their users, the advertising they show them or the intentional manipulation that unverified accounts may promote. .

Once detected, they must quickly eliminate illegal content and the spread of false information and notify the people who published the content as soon as possible of its removal, giving them the possibility of appealing.

One of the main objectives of the regulations is to force platforms to be more transparent in the design of the algorithms that determine the content that users see, in such a way that their manipulation is avoided.

In this sense, companies must provide information to authorities and independent researchers about the design of the algorithms or create an annual repository with the advertisements they have shown on the platforms.

The digital services law does not establish any time limit to conclude the investigation, which according to the Commission does not prejudge its outcome.
