Juan Carlos, a witness, pointed out that the authorities told them that the fire apparently occurred due to an electrical problem. “First it started at the top and went to the bottom, we didn’t have time to get anything out,” added the young man.

Although the tenants tried to extinguish the flames immediately, they spread easily, because plastic footwear and clothing, mainly, are stored and sold in said place. At that moment, the firefighters were called.

After the event that occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. this Thursday, elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security, as well as elements of the Heroic Fire Department, from various mayor’s offices and members of the CdMx Civil Protection Corps, appeared in the place.

While the flames consumed the square and extended to the adjacent buildings, a thick column of black smoke grew to a considerable height, allowing it to be seen from points located kilometers away.

The Vulcans’ water pipes and tank trucks made their way among the semi-fixed posts of those engaged in informal commerce in said area, which were quickly removed to facilitate the transit of said units.

Dozens of vendors stored their merchandise and in the midst of the police mobilization, they loaded and pulled bags and boxes with merchandise in a hurry and took it to their homes, while two helicopters from the Cóndores group flew over the area.
