The Argentine Prosecutor’s Office charged this Wednesday the Former President Alberto Fernandez for alleged abuse of authority and violation of duties as a public official considering that “unduly” extended the quarantine decreed by the pandemic of Covid-19, which was one of the longest in the world.
Prosecutor Carlos Stornelli made the decision based on a complaint made by the statements of the Former Minister of Economy Martin Guzman on the Cenital channel, in which he implied that the quarantine was “longer than it should have been” for reasons of “political convenience”, according to the Argentine newspaper Clarín.
Stornelli thus accused the former president of “extending for improper reasons” the restrictions during the pandemic, which caused serious damage to society and the country’s economy, and based on the complaint filed by legislator Yamil Santoro, of United Republicans.
After that, ordered to investigate the rules issued by the government andIn the framework of these measures against the spread of the coronavirus, request the World Health Organization (WHO) statistics on measures in other countries with regard to the extension and involvement in the freedoms of citizens, and to ask the current government of Javier Milei for documentation of possible surveys on the opinion of Argentines regarding this period.
“We cannot allow that the freedoms of citizens are manipulated for political ends. The decisions taken during the pandemic not only seriously affected the economy and the health of Argentines, but, according to these new testimonies, were used as political marketing tools. “This is not negligence, it is an abuse of power that must be investigated and punished,” Santoro said.
