Informal economy contributes almost a quarter of GDP – El Sol de México

The informal economy contributed 24.4 percent of national GDP last year, almost a quarter, Inegi reported this Monday.

It’s about the highest contribution of this sector to the national economy at least since 2003.

The Measurement of the Informal Economy (MEI) report indicates that the contribution of this segment to the GDP grew 0.4 percentage points compared to 2021, adding two years of growth.

These growths occurred after the Informal economy plummeted in 2020 to 22.1 percent of GDP, its lowest level on record, because almost all productive activity stopped due to the pandemic.

The Inegi document highlights that at the end of last year the informal sector gender 55.4 percent of jobs in the country.
