A UN vehicle that was part of a humanitarian convoy coordinated with the Israeli authorities was hit by Israeli gunfire on Tuesday in Gaza, without any deaths, a UN spokesman announced on Wednesday.
“Last night a UN humanitarian vehicle that was clearly identified and was part of a fully coordinated convoy (with the Israeli armed forces) He was hit ten times by Israeli fire.“said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the secretary general, indicating that two of the occupants were saved thanks to the armour plating.
This incident “is the latest to show that the systems in place for coordination are not working,” he insisted. “We continue to work (with the Israeli Armed Forces) to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.”
“We have no way of assessing the mood of those who are shooting at us,” he said, but “we know that the movement of this convoy was coordinated with the Israeli authorities,” he said, when asked whether the shooting was intentional or not. “Whether the information was not transmitted, whether it was deliberate or whether there was some other reason, these are explanations that we would like to receive.”
It is not the first time that a convoy of the UN is the target of shots since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamastriggered by the unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement on October 7.
In May, a UN official of Indian nationality was killed when his vehicle was shot at.
For this reason, the World Food Programme announced the suspension “until further notice” of the movements of its personnel in Gazaafter one of their vehicles was fired upon by Israeli gunfire-
“This is totally unacceptable,” said Cindy McCain, head of the UN agency, in a statement, confirming the “latest in a series of pointless security incidents that have endangered the lives of our teams in Gaza.”
