The president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum denied that there is a risk of militarization with the reform that transfers control of the National Guard to the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and which is being discussed this Thursday in Congress.

“They have nothing to worry about, human rights will be respected, it is the strength of an institution and does not mean militarization “No matter what they say,” the president told the media upon arriving at her campaign headquarters.

Besides, Sheinbaum Pardo He said there is nothing to worry about regarding the approval of the reform to the National guard Because in addition to respecting the human rightsthe security will depend on a civil powerwhich is she, who will also be Commander of the Armed Forces.

“Militarization means that there is a military command that is making decisions and the decisions are made by the supreme commander of the armed forces, it is a civil power (the National Guard),” he said.

On more than one occasion, Claudia Sheinbaum has shown her support for the reform proposed by the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador which modifies the Constitution on some of the following points:

  • The head of the command of the National guard will be a general of Army Division.
  • The National Guard will be made up of military and marine personnel.
  • The National guard will have the power to investigate crimes within its area of ​​competence.

Regarding the reform, some members of opposition parties have expressed their concern about the militarization it may cause in Mexico.
