Mexican Amanda de la Garza, new deputy artistic director of the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid – El Sol de México

The Mexican Amanda de la Garza, current director of the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC) of the UNAM in Mexico, is the new deputy artistic director of the Reina Sofía Museum in Madridannounced this Wednesday the director of the art center, Manuel Segade.

The museum director announced the appointment during the presentation of the center’s programming for 2024.

De la Garza She is a curator and art historian. He has directed the MUAC since 2020 “one of the most important contemporary art institutions in Latin America,” declared Segade. She is also general director of Visual Arts at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

From 2012 to 2019 she was deputy curator of the MUAC and has curated and coordinated more than 30 exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, such as those of the artists Harun Farocki, Hito Steyerl, Vicente Rojo, Jeremy Deller, Isaac Julien, José Dávila and Chantal Peñalosa, for Mexican and foreign museums.

She was curator of the XVIII Photography Biennial of the Centro de la Imagen and of ‘Readings of a Fractured Territory’, the first review of the contemporary art collection of the Amparo Museum in Puebla (Mexico).

She has been awarded the Emerging Curators Award, the Fronteras Biennial and has enjoyed several research grants in Mexico and abroad.

He is currently a member of the boards of directors of CIMAM (International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art), of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) of Mexico and is a member of the AAMD (Association Art Museum Directors).

In the selective process to elect the new deputy director of the Reina Sofía Museum, which began on November 4, 52 candidates were presented, both Spanish and foreign, although only a dozen reached the final phase.

The new appointment was approved on Tuesday by the permanent commission of the Board of Trustees of the Reina Sofía Museum.
