Nothing will supplant the popular will – El Sol de México

The electoral process taking place in our country is advancing regularly, while the election on June 2 will be held, as stated by the president advisor of the National Electoral Institute, Guadalupe Taddei, under optimal technical-operational conditions.

The official also assured that, a few weeks before election day, 74 thousand workers from that institution are organizing the concurrent elections in our territory. Of these people, 42 thousand are electoral assistant trainers and 7 thousand are electoral supervisors, who already visit door to door to train more than one and a half million compatriots who will serve as officials in just over 170 thousand polling stations.

This information is supported by the conditions of social tranquility that prevail in more than 90 percent of the national territory, as I mentioned previously in this same space.

Unfortunately, it is undeniable that in Mexico there have been murders of candidates for elected office; However, some voices deliberately amplify these cases of violence, to convey the idea that the country lives in a permanent state of crime and barbarism.

It is worth highlighting some data from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, as well as the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, which contravene this informative sensationalism regarding violence.

Last March, intentional homicide in the country was reduced by 22 percent, considering since December 2018, but if we compare this figure with respect to past government administrations, it takes on its true significance, since from 1990 to 1994 the crime of homicide increased 9.2 percent; from 1995 to 2000 it decreased 31.2 percent; from 2001 to 2006 it rose 1.6 percent; From 2007 to 2012 it increased by 192.8 percent, and from 2013 to 2018 it increased by 59 percent.

On the other hand, and according to information from the SSPC itself, in the current electoral process that began last October 1, there is a record, unfortunately, of two deceased candidates who are registered with the electoral bodies of the states; the murder of five pre-candidates who already had official registration with their political parties; eight homicides of applicants, who did not yet have official registration with their political parties or with the electoral institutions, but who had been mentioned for a popularly elected position or at some point expressed their desire to compete.

It is known that the Attorney General’s Office and the local prosecutor’s offices carry out the corresponding investigations of the cases. In any scenario, it is ensured that there will be no impunity for anyone and all support is provided in the investigations.

In the case of the murders of the applicants, pre-candidates and candidates, it must be investigated whether they had requested protection from the federal government, the state governments or the municipal governments, depending on the case and, in such a situation, if the protection was applied in time and form.

Thus, and also according to information from the SSPC, until April 1, 108 requests for protection were registered by candidates, of which 86 have been attended to, 10 were declined and 12 are under risk analysis.

Neither sensationalism nor the risk of violence will cloud the ongoing electoral scenario; Nor will they supplant the popular will that we Mexicans will express at the polls this June 2nd. In our country there is a general democratic spirit that nothing and no one will take away from us.
