Teacher Dulce Pacheco, from the primary school Antonio Abarca Memijelocated in the Adolfo López Mateos neighborhood, told The Sun of Acapulco that on most occasions when it dawns rainy or very cloudy, parents do not take their children to school for fear that they may have an accident.

“Not all children make it to class, only about 70 percent, because some parents decide not to take them to avoid an incident, as it has happened that they have slipped while walking through wet corridors,” said the teacher.

Dulce Pacheco explained that when rainfall persists during school hours or if it rains before recess, students remain in their classrooms, because even though the janitorial staff removes the rain, they “prefer to prevent” accidents.

Meanwhile, the father of the family Mario Manzanarez said that Since Hurricane Otis passed in October 2023, her children Miranda, 8, and Mariano, 10, are afraid of the presence of heavy rains with winds and especially when accompanied by lightning.

“I prefer not to take them. Unfortunately, my children experienced the hurricane with great anguish, as they saw how the windows were torn off by the strong winds and how the water came in. If they are missing for one day, nothing will happen. Besides, their safety comes first,” she said.

Although the Guerrero Education Secretariat did not issue a statement to suspend classes, State and municipal Civil Protection authorities reported that according to the forecast of the National Water Commission (Conagua), the rains will continue in the port of Acapulco.

In Chiapas, Civil Protection authorities reported more than 50 flooded homes, with water levels reaching 70 centimeters; landslides on stretches of road; fallen trees and intermittent power supply; due to heavy rains in the municipalities of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Comitán and Yajalón.
