Students march in several states against judicial reform – El Sol de México

This Sunday, September 1, thousands of students of public universities and private took to the streets in various states of the country to protest against the judicial reformproposed by the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

With banners and slogans rejecting the proposal of the Federal Executive, workers of the Judicial Branch of the Federation and citizens joined them with young people, mainly from Law Schools.

“Lack of preparation is also corruption”, “If you don’t know how to choose the rulers, will you be able to choose the judges?” or “If the people are informed, the reform will not pass” are some of the phrases referring to the protesters’ claim that the election of judges and magistrates by popular vote.

Coinciding with the president’s latest government report Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorin Mexico City the contingent against the reform to Judiciary gathered at the Angel of Independence to march along Paseo de la Reforma towards the Senate of the Republic.

In the country’s capital, politicians could be seen accompanying the protesters, including Lorenzo Cordovaformer president of the INE, Daisy Zavala, Jose Luis Gonzalez Alcantara CarrancaMinister of the Supreme Court of Justice and professor at UNAM, IBERO, CIDE and ITAM, as well as journalist Beatriz Pages.

In Acapulco the meeting point was Costera 125, from where the march left around 9:30 a.m. this Sunday heading to Plaza Francia, where Lawyers and members of civil society also joined in.


Students from the University of Veracruz They also called on society to join the demonstration that began at the State Theater towards Plaza Sebastián Lerdo.

In this regard, the students have asked for dialogue to be opened in the Chamber of Deputies before the reform is approved.

In Aguascalientesstudents of the law degree from various universities in the state also joined the demonstrations against the reform of the judiciary.

The contingent of around 600 people Workers, students and parents gathered at 10:00 a.m. at the Benito Juárez monument, where they left for the Plaza de la Patria.

The objective of the call for the Aguascalientes was to call on citizens to collect signatures that will be attached to a appeal for protection which they will promote before the Judicial Branch of the Federation in order to prevent the reform, which they consider unconstitutional, from passing.

Among the slogans that were repeated was “I am a student and no one manipulated me,” in response to what President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in his Wednesday’s conference that the students who demonstrate are manipulated by their teachers to oppose the reform.

The marches called by university law students are added to the National Strike carried out by workers of the Judiciary, to oppose the reform proposed by the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador which will be discussed in early September.

The judicial reform promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador seeks that ministers, judges and magistrates of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (PJF) be elected by popular vote.
