The pentagon announced this Thursday that he will participate in the protection of the main candidates at US presidential election to support the Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting political figures.
This decision comes more than a month after the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trumpon July 13 in Pennsylvania, which led to the resignation of the director of the Secret Service.
“The Department of Defense will provide additional protection” until the November election and likely until the inauguration ceremony in January 2025, Pentagon deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters.
The Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, approved a request for assistance from the Secret Service department in charge, he added.
On July 13, the former president was wounded in the ear by shots fired from a rooftop by a man who also killed one person and wounded two others who were attending his rally in Butler, in the northeast of the country.
Images of Trump, with his face covered in blood and his fist raised, went around the world.
Several Secret Service agents have been suspended over security flaws.
