Customs and SAT break record of embargoes during AMLO’s six-year term – El Sol de México

In 2023, embargoes foreign merchandise of illegal origin recorded their highest amount so far in the current six-year term of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, according to data from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP).

Between January and December of last year, the Tax Administration Service (SAT)in coordination with authorities customsexecuted 522 embargoes because they were products dand illicit origin in the country, which represented an estimated amount of six thousand 71.1 million pesos.

Likewise, it carried out 430 seizures for around 109.7 million pesos from foreign merchandise whose value was not duly accredited before the SAT upon entering the country.

“Operations were carried out on the main roads where the greatest vehicular flow carrying merchandise of foreign originexercising powers to sensitive sectors such as the textile, clothing, electronics, among others,” the institution told El Sol de México.

According to him Sat, Once the merchandise is seized, the taxpayer will have a period of up to 10 days to justify the origin or legality of the items. However, the authority has the power to determine whether the evidence is sufficient or not.

“Although today the piracy and smuggling are alarming issues, these figures reflect the improvement in customs work, which are essential to avoid a chain of crimes and future infringements,” commented Kevin Alencaster Villa, intellectual property specialist.
