For 40 years the Sundance Film Festival has dedicated itself to projecting and disseminating the best of independent cinema from the United States andrecently, from other parts of the world. Its reach and success have been such that in the last five years the festival has opened extensions of its film exhibitions in London, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
This 2024 everything is ready for you Mexico City becomes the extension of this project for Latin America, with the next start of the Sundance Film Festival CDMXwhich will take place from April 25 to 28.
This is a selection of 12 feature filmsbetween documentaries and fiction, of which 10 were part of the last edition and two of the penultimate one. In addition, six Mexican short films from the last four editions of the same meeting will be screened; and panels on the seventh art will be organized.
“For us, going to Mexico in the following weeks will be very important; filmmakers will be able to connect with producers and distributors. It is really interesting to build and deepen that relationship between us and Mexico, as well as make the opportunity to find new films and continue discovering more solid,” said Eugene Hernández, executive director of the Sundance Film Festivalin conference.
What films will the Sundance Film Festival CDMX screen?
He Sundance Film Festival CDMX will open with Fridaby director Carla Gutiérrez. Frida is a documentary animation about the life and work of the most famous Mexican painter. The documentary will also be presented Love Machinaby filmmaker Peter Sillen, about the construction of a humanoid to which it is planned to transfer, with Artificial Intelligence, the consciousness of a couple to perpetuate their love.
The film also stands out 20 Days in Mariupol, which under the direction of Mstyslav Chernov, won the Oscar for best documentary in 2024, by recording the first weeks of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. From the billboard Sundance Film Festival CDMX will also be part Going Varsity in Mariachiby Sam Osborn and Alejandra Vasquez, which refers to the popular mariachi competitions that take place in Texas, especially in the school environment.
In fictionwill be presented with the performance of René “Resident” Perez, In the Summers, which tells the story of two sisters who spend a complicated summer with their parents, a film that was awarded this year’s Grand Jury Prize. To this will be addedto Your Monster, by Caroline Lindy, which tells the life of a desperate actress who finds her meaning and her voice again with the help of a monster that lives in her closet.

Mexico, the meeting point of the Sundance Film Festival
After remembering that the relationship between Mexico and the Sundance Film Festival dates back approximately a decadewith some collaborations within the Morelia International Film Festival, Alejandro Ramírez, general director of Cinépolis, highlighted the intention of returning to Mexico City and this extension of the festival into a meeting point for audiences, filmmakers, producers and new generations.
Ramírez said that they are trying to ensure that the filmmakers of this first edition can attend to present their own films; In addition, they are finishing scheduling panels that will talk about cinematographic work, debut films and audiovisual production.
Where will the Sundance Film Festival CDMX be?
With 80 performances scheduled for an estimated five thousand attendees, the festival venues are the Cinépolis Diana, Satélite VIP, Perisur VIP, Miyana VIP and Mitikah VIP.
