Cofece investigates alleged collusion in cargo transportation – El Sol de México

The Federal Economic Competition Commission (Coffee) announced that it found signs of possible collusion between suppliers of federal freight transport so as not to compete among themselves, harming consumers.

In a statement, the Investigative Authority of the Coffee initiated an ex officio investigation with file IO-002-2023, with a period of 120 business days. The objective is to determine if this type of agreement would have been held illegal agreements between motor transportation providers.

“Those found responsible will be called to a procedure followed in the form of a trial to present their defense, so the beginning of the investigation does not constitute any prejudgment,” the agency indicated.

The Coffee explained that the cargo transport It is essential for the development of industry and commerce, given its influence on products and inputs reaching consumers in the best conditions. Furthermore, it acquires additional relevance in the context of company relocation due to nearshoring.

In 2022, this mode of transportation was the most used and moved 56.8 percent of the cargo in the country, the organization explained.

The authority indicated that if found guilty, those involved could receive fines for up to 10 percent of the companies’ income, as well as a criminal complaint against people with between five to 10 years in prison.
