International tourists grow without reaching pre-pandemic levels – El Sol de México

Mexico received 42.1 million international tourists during 2023, which represented a 10 percent increase at annual rate but without reaching the figure recorded prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Inegi reported this Monday.

The number of foreign visitors who arrived in the country and spent at least one night was lower than that reported in 2019 by 2.9 million.

This delay is mainly due to border tourist segmentwhich closed the year with 15.2 million visitors, which, although it represented an increase of more than 18 percent at an annual rate, is below those registered in 2019 by six million people.

The appreciation of the peso against the dollar, which makes trips to Mexico more expensive, as well as inflation in the services sector and insecurity in the country, are factors that affect this segment, indicated an analysis by Banco Base.

However, the Inegi report indicates that foreign tourists who arrived in the country by air, and who are the ones who leave the greatest impact, They added 26.8 million in the yearwith a growth of 5.8 percent compared to 2022 and 36.7 percent compared to 2019.

Spending by international visitors continues to rise, with a total of $30,809.5 million in 2023, 10 percent more than the previous year and 25.4 percent more compared to the year before the pandemic.
