Standing next to a live Christmas tree – a first for the British monarchy’s annual festive speech – the king also said he was praying for peace, at a time when conflict rages in the Middle East and elsewhere.

“Caring for this creation is a responsibility that falls to people of all faiths and none,” he said in the pre-recorded royal message broadcast on British television.

The monarch, a defender of the environment for many years and who spoke at the recent UN COP28 climate summit in Dubai, highlighted the importance of “taking care of the Earth for the good of our children’s children.”

Concluding his message by acknowledging “the increasingly tragic conflicts around the world,” he said he prayed “that we too can do everything in our power to protect each other.”

“The words of Jesus seem more relevant than ever: ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,'” he stressed, noting that “such values are universal.”
