UNAM honors engineer Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano – El Sol de México

The National Autonomous University of Mexico made a tribute to Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano on the occasion of his 90th birthday, to remember his work and career in favor of democracy of Mexico.

The tribute held at the Simón Bolívar Amphitheater of the Old School of San Idelfonso, was presided over by the man himself. Cardenas Solórzano, the historian and writer Javier Garciadiego and the university specialist Rolando Cordera.

During the event, the engineer Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas wanted to downplay his career and said that: “the construction democratic is construction site of many heads, talents, efforts, pens, activists, who have allowed us to maintain, build and renew institutions.”

Furthermore, he stressed that the count of the people that have added to the democracy of the country must Start with the fallen dead on different days “after or since 1988. Crimes, I would say, all of them, that remain unpunished.”

In the tribute, Ronaldo Cordera expressed that “the study and the experience of Cuauhtémoc Cardenasthroughout decades and gaps covered with the guidance of their father, the great General and President Lázaro Cárdenas, have always been at the center of the commitment to a Mexico capable of taking new paths towards a society increasingly democratic and fair. An inclusive, plural and supportive nation. Privileged observer and active protagonist. Cuauhtémoc’s political participation knows no rest.”

Meanwhile, the historian and writer Javier Garciadiego considered that “there is no other Mexican, and I emphasize none, who has been an incomparable witness to the progress of the country and one of its main protagonists,” like Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas.

Garciadiego added that President Lázaro Cárdenas and Mrs. Amalia Solórzano “made Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano a unique character.”

Who is Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano?

Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano, Due to his political career, he is considered a moral leader of the left in Mexico. He was a candidate for the presidency of the Republic three times and managed to be the first elected head of government in the then Federal District.

Although the engineer himself rejects being a left-wing politician and prefers to be considered a nationalist, he has spoken out publicly in against of the neoliberalism and the vulnerable classes.

Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas was governor of Michoacan with the PRI in the period from 1980 to 1986 and, in 1987 founded the Current Democratic within that party.

By 1988, he broke with that party due to the reproach of the candidate’s imposition and founded the National Democratic Front in that year’s elections.

After the famous “system failure”electoral in 1988allied with the PAN candidate, Manuel Clouthier and Rosario Ibarra de Piedra of the PRT, to protest election fraud before the Ministry of the Interior.

He later joined the PSUM and in the end, in 1989, formed the PRD with other prominent political figures. However, in 2014 he resigned from that party, stating that he moved away from its ideals.
